Description

Clai Winery is located in the interior of Istria, not far from Krasica, in the village of Brajki. The proximity of the town of Buje as well as the border with Slovenia make us an easily accessible destination for all occasions. Our vineyards cover 10ha, while the olive groves are located on an additional 5ha of land. At 200m above sea level we enjoy a lot of sunny hours and the proximity of the Adriatic Sea brings us a cool-salty breeze. The soil is rich in marl, which creates good drainage, and our vines extend to the roots deep underground, which ensures the recognizable quality of Clai wine. Terroir is our foundation, which we nurture and constantly improve.

Production is based on traditional grape and olive varieties, with a few foreign varieties. We are constantly raising the standard and quality, while quantity is an unknown concept for us. The density of our plantations is high (5700 vines / hectare), and the yields are very low. Production has always been based on organic farming, with no chemical products, herbicides or insecticides. And fertilization is done occasionally in minimal quantities, using only organic and natural fertilizers. Grapes are vinified in the cellar in a natural way, by spotted fermentation on the skins, without the addition of enzymes, yeast or malolactic bacteria. The wine is aged on lees, in large wooden barrels of various sizes, and after two years it is bottled without micro or sterile filtration.
