Geological natural monument - Fantazija Quarry, Rovinj
Bezeichnung
The Fantazija quarry, also known as Cava di Monfiorenzo, is located near Rovinj and has an area of four hectares. Since 1986, it has been a geological monument of nature due to the fact that the locality represents a unique example of limestone sedimentology, and is one of the most important and interesting quarries in the world. The rocks from the Cava di Monfiorenzo quarry are used for the scientific explanation of the origin of similar rocks in the world, because they contain only some, but not all, evidence and indicators of such an origin as the quarry near Rovinj. Namely, during the Mesozoic Istria was part of the Adriatic carbonate platform where carbonate rocks were deposited in a shallow and warm sea.
